Fell Iron & MetalAn unknown number of capacitors containing PCBs were taken to the Fell Iron & Metal scrap yard in Bloomington for salvaging. The PCB liquid inside the capacitors drained onto soil at the site, and contaminated metal parts were scattered around the site. Sampling performed by EPA and the City of Bloomington revealed PCB contamination in groundwater and in storm sewers. Sixteen thousand cubic yards of PCB-contaminated soil were excavated and stockpiled at the site for several years. In late 1995 and early 1996, this material was loaded onto rail cars and taken to the USPCI TSCA landfill in Utah for permanent disposal. Remediation of this site is complete. |
