P

parts per million - Represents the concentration of something in water or soil. One ppm is equivalent to 1 milligram of something per liter of water (mg/l) or 1 milligram of something per kilogram soil (mg/kg). (abbrev. ppm)

parts per billion - Represents the concentration of something in water or soil. One ppb represents one microgram of something per liter of water (ug/l), or one microgram of something per kilogram of soil (ug/kg). (abbrev. ppb)

percolation - Movement of water through soil. The downward movement of liquid (such as water) through a porus medium (such as soil).

permeability - A term used to describe the ability of water to move through a porus medium (such as soil). Soil with a high coefficient (value) of permability can transmit water more quickly than soil with a low coefficient of permability.

pollutant - Undesirable substances discharged to soil or water, making the receiving body unfit for use.

polychlorinated biphenyl - A man-made chemical produced by adding chlorine atoms to biphenyl rings. There are 209 types of PCB compounds (congeners) described by the general formula C12HxCly where x=0 to 9 and y=10 - x. Westinghouse Corporation filled electrical capacitors with PCB formulations manufactured by Monsanto under the trade name Aroclor. (abbrev. PCB)
