Download Instructions

In the following suggested connection configuration instructions, entries in quotes reflect the program prompts and the bold entries are what you type into the space provided. Please note that the entry your e-mail address is to be in the format of name@xyz.com.

Apple Mactintosh

For Apple Macintosh users, we suggest the current version of Dartmouth University's Fetch, which is currently version 3.0.3. Download and install the program. At the "Host:" prompt, enter starters.net in the space provided. At the "User ID: prompt, enter anonymous in the space provided. At the "Password:" prompt, enter your e-mail address in the space provided. At the "Directory:" prompt, enter copa_ftp\pdf in the space provided. Then click on the "OK" button to make the connection. The file name(s) will be displayed. Click on the file name [or hold down on the SHIFT key and click on multiple file names] to select the file(s) to download. Then click on the "Get file" button to download to your computer system. You will be prompted for the target area to store the selected file(s). After selecting the target storage area, click on the "Save" button to complete downloading the file(s). Go to the "FILE" menu and select "QUIT" option to end this ftp session.

Microsoft Windows

Since there are many variations of Microsoft's Windows in use, we suggest ws_ftp le from Ipswitch software (this is the last entry in the download choices for WS_FTP). Note that you will need to download and install WinZip from this same web page [in the Utilities section near the bottom of the page] to decompress this ftp program. The shareware file, WS_FTP_Limited Edition, includes versions for Windows 3.x, Windows 95 and Windows NT. After downloading these two programs to your hard disk via your browser, decompress WinZip by clicking on the file name and following the prompts. Then click on the WS_FTP to invoke WinZip and decompress and then install the ftp program. After starting the WS-FTP LE program, a "Session Properties" box will be displayed. Click on the "New" button to create this connection profile for COPA's .pdf ftp site. At the "Profile Name:" prompt, we suggest entering COPA pdf ftp site in the space provided. At the "Host Name/Address:" prompt, enter starters.net in the space provided. At the "Host Type:" prompt, leave it on Automatic Detect. Click on the "Anonymous" check box and make sure that the "User ID:" field shows anonymous and the "Password:" field shows your e-mail address [your address should have been entered during the installation process of WS_FTP LE]. Enter these values if they do not display. Then click on the "Startup" tab and at the "Initial Remote Host Directory" prompt, enter copa_ftp\pdf in the space provided. You can select a target directory for the downloaded files by entering the local path name in the space provided below the "Initial Local Directory" prompt. Then click on the "Apply" button. Then click on the "OK" button. The connection will be established and the COPA files will be in the right window. Click on the file name(s) desired and then the left direction arrow [<-] and the files will be downloaded to your computer. Click on the "Exit" button to end this ftp session.

Microsoft's Windows 95 and Windows NT users have an easier option to use the built in ftp program. Click on the "Start Flag" button and then the "Run" button. Enter ftp starters.net in the space provided. A DOS based text window will now be displayed showing that a connection has been made and the prompt "User ...:" has a flashing cursor beside it. Enter anonymous and hit the "Enter" key. At the "Password: prompt, enter your e-mail address and hit the "Enter" key. At the "ftp>" prompt, enter cd copa_ftp/pdf and hit the "Enter" key. At the "ftp>" prompt, enter dir and hit the "Enter" key. At the "ftp>" prompt, enter get filename.extension [such as phase1.pdf] and hit the "Enter" key. The file will be downloaded to your computer. As a variation, at the "ftp>" prompt, enter mget file1.ext file2.ext ... and hit the "Enter" key and multiple files will be downloaded. Unless configured differently, the downloaded files are at the root level of Drive C. Click on the "X" button in the upper right hand corner of the window to close the session.
