The chemistry has been demonstrated at various scales for PCBs, dioxins, PCP, DDT, and chlorinated aliphatics. Proprietary KPEG reacts with PCBs to produce an aromatic ether. This ether is insoluble in oil an can be separated from the oil at this point. A second reaction can further dechlorinate the molecule producing inorganic chlorides. KPEG can be applied to liquids or to solids via a custom implementation to soils, sludges or sediments by retrofit of a commercial desorber. In a typical system, contaminated soil or sludge is fed into a desorber with KPEG. The desorber heats the mixture to initiate the dechlorination. Vapors and treated soil or sludge exit the desorber. Products of the reaction, free of organic chloride, can be readily disposed of or can be burned as fuel to fire the desorber. The technology was licenced for full-scale use at the Wide Beach Superfund site in New York where PCB concentrations were reduced to ppb order of magnitude. Technology Type: CHEMICAL TREATMENT - DECHLORINATION (s0B TECHNOLOGY HIGHLIGHTS Unlike other chemical dechlorination system, KPEG does not employ a hazardous solvent. This leads to safer and more cost-effective application. In addition, complete dechlorination can be achieved avoiding any questions about toxicity of the treated soil. Technology Type: CHEMICAL TREATMENT - DECHLORINATION (s0B OTHER COMMENTS ON TECHNOLOGY KPEG was developed and patented in 1978. The chemistry has a long and successful history in treatment of PCB contaminated transformer oil. SDTX has adapted the process for use on soils, sludges, and sediments. SDTX licensed the patent and technology to SoilTech, Inc. for use at the Wide Beach Superfund site in New York. This was the largest scale demonstration of the technology as well as the first use of it for treatment of PCBs at a Superfund site. Wide Beach further demonstrated the feasibility of retrofitting a desorber for application of KPEG. Page No. 5 of 20 VISITT 4.0 01/26/96 (s3B Vendor Name: SDTX TECHNOLOGIES, INC. Technology Type: CHEMICAL TREATMENT - DECHLORINATION (s0B TREATABILITY STUDY CAPABILITIES (BENCH-SCALE) Description of bench-scale testing procedures: ---------- SDTX contracts out its treatability testing to National Environmental Technology Applications Corporation (NETAC) which is fully permitted. A number of tests and details of procedure are proprietary. The objective is to predict full-scale performance from bench-scale data. A previous bench-scale treatability conducted by NETAC is described below: The objective was to determine the rate of removal of chlorine from model aromatic compounds. In contrast to many other environmental studies, this work determined the total amount of chloride ion released as a function of reaction temperature, time, and stoichiometry. This approach differs from the usual environmental test which measures the fraction of the chlorinated aromatic that has reacted - presumably measuring therefore only the first chlorine removal. Several distinct reactor configurations were employed. At low temperature, i.e., less than 150 degrees Centigrade, and below the boiling point of the reaction solvent, the heater block was placed on a hot plate, or a three neck flask with nitrogen purge was used. For the highest temperature runs, a 3/16 stainless steel high pressure bomb, immersed in a fluidized sand bath and agitated by an internal stainless steel ball, served as the reactor. After reaction, the mixtures were quenched by acidification, diluted with water and the chloride released was measured using a specific ion electrode. A strong correlation can be seen between the achievable degree of dechlorination and reaction temperature. Loosely speaking, 50 percent dechlorination is found overnight at room temperature. The fourth chlorine atom can be reacted in two hours at 80 degrees Centigrade; the fifth requires 150 degrees Centigrade and complete dechlorination is observed in the 185 - 200 degrees Centigrade temperature range. Data also show that the effect of reagent stoichiometry is not dominant. Can you conduct bench-scale treatability studies on some types of waste at your location: No Number of bench-scale studies conducted to date. Technology Type: CHEMICAL TREATMENT - DECHLORINATION (s0B FULL SCALE INFORMATION Major unit processes : The KPEG (SM) process can be carried out in many full-scale desorbers. Any desorber with suitable solids residence time and temperature capability can be used. In a typical arrangement contaminated sludge or soil is fed into a desorber. KPEG is added to the desorber. The mixture is heated to initiate the dechlorination reaction. Vapors and treated slugde or soil exit the desorber. Vapors are condensed and sent to a phase separator. The overhead organic stream obtained after phase separation can be further reacted with KPEG or another treatment in a separate reactor. Uncondensed vapors are sent to an off-gas handling system. It may be necessary to adjust unit operation to ensure that no PCBs or other hazardous contaminants are contained in the aqueous overhead stream.
